Why do you need an IHI to get proof of COVID vaccination?

You don’t need an IHI to get vaccinated but you do need an IHI to prove that you have been vaccinated.

For people who are not eligible for Medicare (most internationals), an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) is required to access their vaccination status online, through the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).  An IHI is obtained by application through a Services Australia myGov account.

Individuals cannot download their COVID-19 vaccination digital certificates, unless they have a MyGov account and their vaccinations have been uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) which is a separate database to Medicare.
