Overseas workers in Australia must prove their COVID-19 vaccinations
The pandemic caused major disruption in the Australian workforce, the result being skilled migration is at very low levels and there is an acute shortage of labour.
Thousands of overseas workers will be returning, or coming to Australia for the first time, to study and work. The majority of them will be required to upload their overseas COVID-19 vaccinations to AIR, in order to generate a digital proof of COVID vaccination.
In Australia, the law states that the government must keep a record of who has specific vaccinations. International travellers must provide evidence that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before entering Australia.
Unless they have a medical exemption, they also must be able to provide proof of their COVID-19 vaccinations to their employers before they can work on site. These worker requirements vary from state to state.
Without eligibility for Medicare, getting proof of COVID vaccination is most often problematic for the international workforce in Australia.
After they set up a myGov account and an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI), their COVID-19 vaccines need to be uploaded to Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) before a digital certificate proof of vaccination can be downloaded and linked to Services apps.
The potential for fraudulent vaccination records is high and, therefore, the only secure form of proof is the Australian Government recognised COVID-19 Digital Certificate or Statement of Vaccination.
Only registered healthcare providers are authorised to search for & upload vaccinations to the AIR. Although access to AIR through the myGov process is free, there is usually a significant cost to have overseas vaccinations linked to the register.
