Are you an international coming to Australia & having difficulty getting your Australian COVID digital certificate?

Internationals arriving in Australia on student or work visas must produce evidence of COVID-19 vaccinations before they can enter the country.

Once in Australia, our international visitors must provide their Australian employers and/or educational institutions with digital certificate proof of vaccination.

Internationals do not automatically qualify for Medicare, therefore, in order to obtain their COVID digital certificate, they must:

·        set up an Australian myGov account

·        apply for an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) - a unique 16-digit number which identifies them

·        apply to an Australian authorised provider to upload their overseas vaccinations to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).  This service usually involves a fee.

·        once linked to AIR, download the secure digital certificate through their myGov account

This is not an easy process and there are numerous problems and roadblocks for internationals to successfully access their Australian evidence of vaccination, for example:

1.      The identification details entered into any myGov account must exactly match the name & date of birth details as listed in their visa/passport.

a.      Some individuals have only one name and that needs to also be matched in the myGov profile

b.      Some individuals have multiple names e.g. two first names and two second names.  These names must be listed in myGov in the same format.

c.      Sometimes, auto fill is used to enter name details and this can often introduce another character, such as, a space which may be rejected by myGov

2.      Once myGov is set up, an IHI must be requested.  Despite having a myGov account, sometimes the system does not recognise the application for an IHI and issues an error message. (These error messages can be accessed via the www.CovidProof.online website.

3.      Once a myGov account and IHI have been successfully linked, the individual must find an authorised provider to upload their overseas vaccinations to the Australian Immunisation Register.

a.      There are a few Government services that provide this service free of charge

b.      Most authorised providers, such as medical clinics, will charge a fee for uploading vaccinations.

c.      Many authorised providers will only provide the service for their existing patients.

d.      If Internationals are able to get an appointment at a clinic, they may be charged a private consultation fee, which can be in excess of $100.

Workplace requirements for COVID vaccination vary according to the relevant Australian states & territories.

In Victoria, for example, information about workers, who are required to be vaccinated against COVID, can be found at Victorian Government Worker Vaccination Requirements.
